Image Tagging

In the following we describe the annotation instructions for the image tagging task.

1. Your Mission

The task is to annotate each image with 3 different tags. The tags and their possible values are listed below:
  • weather:
    • NA

    • Rainy

    • Snowy

    • Clear

    • Overcast

    • Partly Cloudy

    • Foggy

  • timeofday:
    • NA

    • Daytime

    • Night

    • Dawn/Dusk

  • scene:
    • NA

    • Tunnel

    • Residential

    • Parking Lot

    • City Street

    • Countryside

    • Gas Stations

    • Highway

Note: The NA attribute is for images where the domain attributes cannot be inferred, e.g. we cannot infer the weather from an image captured in a tunnel.

In the labeling interface, you can click on the respective value for each tag, and the value will appear on the image, like this:

2. Labeling convention

To clarify which images should be labeled with which values for each tag, we provide a few examples and explanations below. Please read it carefully!

2.1 The weather tag

2.1.1 NA

The the weather cannot be inferred (e.g. in a tunnel or buildings or other cars occlude a large portion of the image). Occurs sometimes, more often during night.

2.1.2 clear

The sky is visible, there are little to no clouds. Shadows are usually clear and distinctive. During night, this attribute is used for images without rain and snow (i.e. dry weather). Example:

_images/clear.jpg

2.1.3 partly cloudy

There are clouds, but the sky is still visible. Not used during night. Example:

_images/partly_cloudy.jpg

2.1.4 overcast

The sky is fully occluded by clouds. Shadows (if any) are usually less clear and pronounced. Not used during night. Example:

_images/overcast.jpg

2.1.5 snowy

Snow is visible in the image; there could be both clear sky and snow, in this case the attribute will be snowy. Example:

_images/snowy.jpg

2.1.6 rainy

Rain is visible in the image, the sun is not visible. Example:

_images/rainy.jpg

2.2 The timeofday tag

2.2.1 NA

The time of the day cannot be inferred, e.g. in a garage. Occurs rarely.

2.2.2 dawn/dusk

There is already/still light, but one can see that it is weak. Cars might have their lights on. Example:

_images/dawn_dusk.jpg

2.2.3 night

It is clearly dark outside. Cars usually have their lights on.

2.2.3 daytime

Any time it is not dark and it is not dawn/dusk. Cars usually don’t have their lights on.

2.3 The scene tag

2.3.1 NA

Scene cannot be inferred. This could happen due to large objects (e.g. trucks blocking the sight). Occurs rarely.

2.3.2 tunnel

The car is inside a tunnel. Usually a tunnel along a highway.

2.3.3 parking lot

The car is not on the road. There are cars parking. Example:

_images/parking_lot.jpg

2.3.4 city street

A road that is usually wider, sometimes with multiple lanes, with a considerable amount of traffic and/or pedestrians. Beside the road there are usually many buildings like shops, offices, apartment buildings or others. Example:

_images/city.jpg

2.3.5 residential

A road that is usually more narrow and with less traffic. Beside the road there are usually houses or apartment buildings, not many shops or offices. Example:

_images/residential.jpg

2.3.6 countryside

A road that can be wide or narrow, but usually with not a lot of traffic. Beside the road there is mainly vegetation, only a few cars or houses. Includes roads that pass small towns. Example:

_images/countryside.jpg

2.3.7 highway

The road has multiple lanes, there is a barrier between the road and the surroundings. Example:

_images/highway.jpg

2.3.8 gas stations

The car is not on the road. There is a gas station. Example:
